How it works

What PetLumen can
and cannot see.

Most pet health tools tell you what they are good at. This one tells you where it falls down, because that is the part that matters when your animal is unwell at eleven at night.

What this page is

PetLumen is a triage and record tool. It helps you decide whether something is a phone call now, an appointment tomorrow, or something to watch. It then keeps a dated, photographed history you can hand to your vet. It is not a diagnosis, and no veterinarian reviews it.

What it actually looks at

The scan reads a photo or a short video of one part of your animal and reports what is visible in that image: colour, symmetry, swelling, discharge, posture, coat and skin surface, and how those compare with your own earlier scans of the same animal.

The urgency check is separate: it asks three questions and applies species-specific rules to route you. Every result carries a confidence level per finding. Low confidence means the image did not show enough, not that the animal is fine.

What it cannot see, and never will from a photo

  • Anything internal: pain, organ function, blood values, temperature, blood pressure, internal bleeding, obstruction, tumours below the skin.
  • How an animal feels: we do not score mood, happiness or distress, and any product that claims to from a photo is guessing.
  • Progression you have not photographed.
  • Anything outside the frame: a clear eye scan says nothing about breathing.
  • Species-specific conditions that present without visible signs, which is why the urgency check exists alongside the scan and why it errs toward sending you to a vet.

Known failure modes

Poor light, motion blur, distance and dark coats or scales all reduce what the model can read; the app blocks the worst images but a technically acceptable photo can still be uninformative.

It errs toward urgency, which means a "see a vet soon" result is weaker evidence than a "call now" result. It is an AI model and can be wrong in both directions, including on something obvious to a person in the room; if what you are seeing does not match what it says, trust what you are seeing.

We publish no accuracy figure because we have not run the kind of study that would justify one, and anybody in this category quoting a percentage without a published method should be asked for the method.

Who has checked this

Nobody outside the company. Our guides are written by the PetLumen editorial team from named veterinary references, cited and dated on each page, and no veterinarian reviews or approves this content or the model's output. We would rather say that plainly than let a badge imply otherwise.

What we do not do

We do not diagnose, we do not name conditions as fact, and we do not tell you how to treat your animal: no doses, no medication names, no substances to apply, no procedures. Giving treatment instructions for a specific animal is veterinary medicine and requires a relationship between a licensed vet and your pet that we do not have.

When to stop reading and call someone

Difficulty breathing, collapse, seizure, uncontrolled bleeding, a suspected toxin, straining to urinate without producing urine, a rabbit or small mammal that has not eaten or passed droppings for 12 hours, or a bird sitting fluffed on the cage floor. Do not open the app. Call your vet or an emergency hospital.

Telling us we got it wrong

If a result was wrong, especially if it was reassuring and should not have been, send it to us at support@petlumen.ai with the scan date. We read every one, we keep a dated log of what changed as a result, and it is the main way this gets better. We will not publish your animal's details.

PetLumen is an AI-assisted triage and monitoring tool. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. Always consult a licensed veterinarian for any medical concern about your pet.

If your pet is in distress - collapse, laboured breathing, seizures, uncontrolled bleeding, suspected poisoning, bloat, or trauma - stop and contact an emergency veterinarian or a poison control line immediately. Do not wait for a scan result.
